One of the latest developments in cell phone privacy is the hidden danger of having your telephone conversations monitored and your text messages intercepted. Reported on March 6, 2009 in Taiwan, the Taiwan National Communications Commission and the Criminal Investigation Bureau raided a shop in Taipei where the owner was selling mobile phone spying software. Mobile phones that use the Symbian 60 operating system can be infected by the spyware. The virus is sent to mobile phones by an unsolicited SMS text message. When the phone owner reads the message, the virus is downloaded into the phone. Then, the hacker uses a special SIM card in their own phone to turn it on remotely with a ringless connection.
That means that the hacker can then overhear private cell phone conversations, as well as tap into copies of all of the recipient's text messages. According to a recent report, nearly 88% of all Americans own a cell phone. That includes children and teens.
Parents need to tell their children that unsolicited text messages can be dangerous. In particular, girls love to texting on their own cell phones, and they may be completely unaware of the danger of potential abusers or stalkers listening in on them.
Many mobile phone handsets made by Nokia, Samsung, LG and others use the Symbian 60 operating system. If your daughter or family member is vulnerable, parents can look at their cell phone bills, to see if messages have been sent to any unidentified cell phone numbers.
